Bringing people together to talk about the Treaty

The TRC is the lead provider of facilitated community dialogue on the Treaty of Waitangi, funded by the Treaty of Waitangi Information Unit (TWIU) of the State Services Commission. The discussions aim to provide New Zealanders with the opportunity to consider and discuss the contemporary place of the Treaty in New Zealand.

The community dialogues will enable participants to develop an understanding of their own position and how they relate to the positions of others in their communities. The conversations are not intended to develop consensus amongst participants or to identify courses of action.

Dialogue will focus on the place of the Treaty now and in the future, rather than on colonisation, Treaty grievances or racism. Discussions will not rely on participants' knowledge about the Treaty or New Zealand history, but on their thoughts about New Zealand's future.

The TRC will provide a pool of specially-trained facilitators from a diverse range of backgrounds, with at least two facilitators for each discussion group. The TRC is also developing and producing resources for use by facilitators and community discussion participants.
