Rinma Rata and the powers that be: a story of a clash of cultures

DIGITAL LIBRARY

Description

"In April Rina Rata applied for a job with the Auckland Hospital Board. She didn't get it. The job went to a Pakeha male. her subsequent appeal and his withdrawal have caused a furore which has thrown into sharp relief many of the racial stresses in our society. The Auckland Hospital board has been forced to take another look at the way people are selected for jobs – and at some of it's members' attitudes to different cultural values. It has not been a comfortable experience for anyone. The case of Rina Rata raises other questions too. Of the role of the Public Services Association and its pushing for affirmative action, of Maori radicals and of liberal clergymen."
