In this essay the author provides a brief context around colonisation and the Māori proposal "Matike Mai" that seeks equitable relationships with all other New Zealanders through a programme of constitutional transformation. It is one of a series of reflections published on Waitangi Day each year in memory of the work of the late Reverend Joan Cook.
