“Maori news is bad news”: That’s certainly so on television
MEDIA RESEARCH
Description
Mainstream TV news programmes (One News, Tonight, 3 News, Nightline, Prime News) carried very few Maori news stories (2% of the total, 28); on eight of the 21 days they showed no Maori news stories. Of the 28 shown, 18 focused on violence among Maori or against Maori children as if violence were a Maori characteristic. Apart from isolated exceptions, stories encouraged viewers to see Mäori as violent, criminal, and irresponsible. On days when English-language programmes carried 28 stories, Te Kaea and Te Karere carried 250 more varied Maori news items.
